Our Programs
Breaking the Barriers to Hearing Disability in the Dominican Republic
Currently 8 educational institutions dedicated to special education for hearing impaired children are part of this program. The main objective of this program is to take in as many children as possible into the educational institutions and provide them with hearing aids completely free of charge, in order to subsequently provide them with the follow-up they need. The intention is to organize, in collaboration with AuditionSolidarite, annual operations in which professionals from the area participate and in which comprehensive attention is provided to the beneficiaries, in order to be able to deliver the hearing aids adapted and adjusted according to the needs of each individual.
During the care days we perform ear cleaning if necessary, evaluations/audiometries, taking impressions for the molds, programming of hearing aids and to finalize the process we perform a series of orthophonic exercises to ensure that the child is hearing well with the devices. Also, during the days, using the educational method “learning by doing”, the team of the Oír para Vivir Foundation is trained in the different areas so that after the delivery of the hearing aids and once the operation is finished, they can continue with the work and follow up with the children. The follow-up visits, which are carried out monthly, aim to ensure that the children are adapting well to the use of their hearing aids, that the equipment delivered is working properly, to maintain the hearing aids, to program the hearing aids if necessary and recently introduced hearing rehabilitation therapies. A total of 358 children are currently part of the Breaking the Barriers to Hearing Impairment program in the Dominican Republic.
